STEVE LOWE :: Research :: Student-User Modeling

About this project

This is one element of work-in-progress research in the area of machine learning, student-user modeling and career guidance. It is being undertaken as part of my dissertation project on an MSc (Information Technology) programme of study at University of Liverpool. It is presented in the context of a wider project Virtual Incubator, and the first output of this project Shamanic Powers is an interactive game designed to capture 17 attributes of a student-player's motivation, competency and efficiency. Thank you for your participation and if you have any queries about this research please email me at lmsfarm@gmail.com

The Domain Expert Console and ARFF file generator

click to go to the domain expert consoleThe Domain Expert Console is an interactive tool to capture the knowledge and experience of experts in career guidance.

Such an expert can use the console in one of three ways to match student-player attributes to career paths: Mode A — Preselect a class, then set the attributes; Mode B — Computer sets the attributes, DE selects the class; Mode B (adjusted) — Computer sets the attributes, DE can adjust the attributes, DE selects the class.

It is easy to configure the console with a different set of classes. The classes demonstrated here were borrowed from guidance notes for prospective gap year students on the Career Services site Rapuara seek the path.

Please use the console and the data will contribute to the training data, helping my application to recognise patterns in student behaviour and suitability for different career paths. Any comment you have on the concept or its current state of realisation will be welcomed.
